Book Title: Everyday Obedience : Walking Purposefully in His Grace
Author: Katie Orr
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
About this Book:
This book is one of the five focused 15 study method books that has been written by Katie Orr. The focused 15 method, is a way to help you slow down and focus on the word of the Lord.
Katie Orr’s focused 15 studies intrigued my interest because of the idea of learning to dig deeper within fifteen minutes. As a mother, it is often hard to get alone time to have my quiet times. To me, my quiet times are sacred and they help renew my soul before taking on a new day. The focus method teaches you to slow down and not plow through a topic or group of verses.
Each focused 15 book that Katie has written teaches you the FOCUS method. Each one is a four week study that walks you through the certain topic. The first week helps one to learn what the focus method is and slowly walks you through it. I love how she does this with each book and in Everyday Obedience it is no different. Often times I have read verses on my daily Bible readings just to check it off a list, then later in the day I’m not able to recall what I read or even learned. The focus method keeps you on one section of verses for a week before moving on. Helping one to memorize the word, learn it better, and then be able to recall what it was about and apply it.
I enjoyed Everyday Obedience because it focused in on Colossians 3:1-17. Each week focused in on a small section of these verses. Katie then walks you through how to look deeper into the meaning of this passage. First she slows you down by having you write out the verses one day, then day two you are taught how to looks for truths, commands, and other observations that stick out to you. Day three, is all about learning how to use Greek Lexicon and how to learn the root definition of the word that was translated. I have especially loved this part of the study, as I have no theology background, but it truly was such a simple step to learn. Breaking down the meaning and actually seeing words in the Bible in their original Greek or Hebrew form and seeing the definitions for what the author meant. Day four, she teaches you about cross-references and learning to look for similar Scriptures to better understand the one you are reading. The last day of each week is where application and learning to summarize what the verses mean comes into play. Application has always been one of the hardest struggles for me with reading Scripture so I have found each one of these days beneficial in my daily walk of life.
I think one of the biggest things that stuck out to me after completing this book study was the definition of obedience that Katie gets to – “Obedience is the right response to the grace of God.”
This book study is great for those looking for a way to learn how to dig deeper into God’s word but are limited in time.
