One of the most common ways to study the Bible is to memorize scripture.
When we memorize scripture we have the sword of the spirit at our finger tips at all times ready to strike back whenever the enemy is ready to attack:
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; Ephesians 6:11-17 (NKJV)
Although we know that memorizing scripture is a great way to keep the tools God has given to us, to encourage us and fight our spiritual battles, we often don’t know where to start when it comes to memorizing scripture.
Here are some tips you can use to memorize scripture:
Write it down. Remember in elementary school when our teachers would make us write our spelling list over and over again so that we would remember our spelling words?
Well this technique actually works when it comes to writing the scripture you are trying to memorize. Try writing the scripture you are learning over and over again 10 times.
Have it where you can see it. This isn’t a new tip at all, but posting the scripture you are memorizing down on an index card or sticky note and placing it around your house will help you memorize the scripture. When you see it say it, whether it be out loud or to yourself.
Break it up. I tend to memorize scripture best when I break it apart. I’ll memorize the first half of the scripture, then the second half. Breaking it up into parts helps my mind grasp it better. Some memory verses can be a bit too long to remember all at once.
Put it into context. One of my favorite activities to do when memorizing scripture is to put it into context.
I like to read the chapter my memorization scripture is found in so I can get a clear understanding as to the context of the scripture. Just memorizing scripture seems a bit mundane at times, but when we know the context and reading God’s word, it can make memorizing scripture a whole lot more meaningful.
Taking the time to get into God’s word and studying scripture just sets us up to receive ALL the blessings God has provided to us through His word and through His Son Jesus Christ.
Great advice on how to memorize scripture.
The Word will stay with you for eternity. Memorizing Scripture is having God’s power in your heart and mind. So good for us!!!
